STILA - Stila cosmetics are pure encouragement. In October 1994, Los Angeles makeup artist Jeanine Lobell launched a line of cosmetics for busy women like herself that wanted to look and feel great but did not want to spend hours making themselves up nor waste time trying to find the basics in the piles of cosmetic promises at the makeup counter. Her line evolves around the key products: Foundation, powder, lip colour, mascara, eye shadow and cheek colour, plus brushes to facilitate application.

Lobell's colours perform. In the beginning, she explains, "I was relentless. The shadows had to blend without blotching, the lip colour had to be the exact shade I specified... with every shade of product requiring its own formulation." Her foundation is highly pigmented, evening out yellow skin tones and neutralizing pink or red complexions. Lobell's 17 lip colours come in stain, sheer, velvet and matt finishes and her unique taupe mascara is fantastic for blondes or for a no mascara look.

One of the most seductive aspects of the Stila line is the packaging, made out of durable matt black recycled paper. On the inside of each eye shadow lid is a message of a notable woman, such as George Eliot's "A difference of taste in jokes is a great strain on the affections," or Susan B. Anthony's "Those who are really in earnest must be willing to be anything or nothing in the world's estimation."

Many of her lipsticks are named after famous women, such as 'Billie' (Holliday) or (Clare Boothe) 'Luce'.

Explains Lobell, "Our lives are so complex between working, schooling, raising children, the last thing women need is to feel diminished rather than supported when it comes to their appearance. The message I want to send to women is a positive one and we don«t get enough of that."
